Top Five Diesel Trucks of 2017
With new models and upgraded technology available for previous models, 2017 is an excellent time to own a diesel truck. Among all the new models, the following five trucks are the top choices for 2017.
2017 Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon
New to the diesel world, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado and sibling GMC Canyon are all the hype. With their compact design, excellent towing capacity and impressive fuel economy, the Colorado and Canyon meet the needs of consumers the larger options just cannot.
A 2.8 liter Duramax engine that produces 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque powers the truck, and the 7,700-pound towing capacity is 700 pounds increased from the gas-powered version. The GMC Canyon is also available in the Denali package.
2017 Nissan Titan XD
Fitting between the light-duty and heavy-duty models of other manufacturers, the Titan XD lives in a niche of its own. Its 5.0 Cummins turbo diesel can tow 12,640 pounds and falls somewhere in the 15 mpg range. From basic trims in RWD to the Platinum Reserve models, you can plan on spending anywhere from $37,140 to $65,000. The driving dynamics, lower price tag, interior comforts, and towing capacity are what make the XD a unique option for a mid-sized class.
2017 Ford Super Duty
Always innovating with technological advances, the Super Duty offers adaptive cruise control, collision warning and trailer brake support. The 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 has a towing capacity of 32,500 pounds, provides 440 horsepower and 925 pound-feet of torque.
From lessons learned with the F-150 aluminum-intensive models, the Super Duty has implemented high-strength steel and aluminum, lightening the truck by 350 pounds.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD/GMC Sierra HD
The Silverado HD and Sierra HD offer a new engine for 2017 with reduced engine noise and a smooth, refined ride. The 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 engine delivers 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. While the HD’s are comparable to the Super Duty in this regard, the towing capacity is the lowest of the heavy duty models. The 2500 HD can tow up to 18,100 pounds, while the 3500 HD can tow up to 23,300 pounds.
The GMC Sierra can also be fitted in the Denali trim, with luxury being the key ingredient. LED headlights, power running boards, and changes to suspension tuned by the Magnetic Ride Control are a few features to expect.
2017 Ram 2500/3500 HD
King of the Rams, the Ram heavy-duty pickup is available in several trims, cab configurations and tradesman models. The 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel delivers 385 horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque, the 3500 towing up to 31,210 pounds.
Starting at $41,345 for the 2500 HD, a consumer can expect to spend upwards of $70,000 for premium trims and cab configurations.
